Greetings from Financial Sector Talent Enrichment Programme or FSTEP.

FSTEP is a project managed by the Institute of Bankers Malaysia, in collaboration with the Central Bank of Malaysia (Bank Negara Malaysia). It is an industry-driven project which aims to recruit and develop human talent to support the dynamic growth of the financial services industry in Malaysia.

In this regard, FSTEP is targeted to attract high caliber graduates with CGPA of 3.25 and above from diverse academic backgrounds to pursue exciting and successful careers in the financial services industry. Graduates will stand to acquire and develop the essential skills under our one-year training programme. Our training programme provides intensive 7-month classroom training in banking and insurance including Islamic banking and Takaful. The comprehensive training module encompasses simulations, workshops, case studies as well as familiarization visits with financial institutions in Malaysia. Participants will also undergo personal development programme and be involved in community projects aimed at developing well-rounded individuals. The remaining 5-month comprises an internship programme with one of the organizations within the financial services industry. (e.g. commercial bank, investment bank, Islamic bank, Insurance/Takaful company)

Presently, FSTEP has embarked on an exercise to enroll interested and qualified Malaysian graduates into our programme for the 5th intake commencing February 19, 2010. We are desirous of achieving a balanced mix of graduates below the age of 30 from the local and foreign universities, based on their academic, English language proficiency and co-curricular merits.

Having said this, we are requesting your cooperation to disseminate our poster in your various communications media (printed and electronic) to assist in publicizing our effort to recruit the incoming participants. To enable you to assist us, we have attached a softcopy of the brochure for you to forward to all Malaysian graduates at your esteemed institution.

With over 30 years of industrial experience and after being a CEO of a large Australian fund management firm which manages over a billion dollar of investments, Don Clifton is currently attached with the University of South Australia, teaching an MBA Sustainable Corporate Strategy course. His commercial background is in the financial services sector (over 30 years in that industry) having held a number of senior positions with firms involved in investment funds management, as well as managing his own business. Don Clifton?s current research is on "Sustainability and government - a case study of the South Australian Government". This research involves an analysis of the SA Government's approach to sustainability and the mapping of this approach onto the Sustainable World typology, based on an Ecological Footprint Analysis. He is also a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Board Member of Trees For Life.

The World Civic Forum (WCF), jointly initiated by Kyung Hee University and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), will hold its inaugural forum on May 5-8, 2009 at the COEX in Seoul, Korea under the main theme of “Building Our Humanitarian Planet.” The WCF 2009 emerges from the leading collaboration between the UN and institutions of higher learning, and aims to develop into an ongoing global institution with the partnership of like-minded actors such as NGOs, international organizations, governments, private enterprise, and the media. As a venue for global reflection and dialogue to enhan ce future civilizations, it will address the internationally agreed development goals including the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) from various perspectives of education, research, and practice. The WCF 2009, to be followed by succeeding ones bi-annually thereafter, will highlight the following themes. For more information, please click here.

Main Theme: Building Our Humanitarian Planet

Our Earth is calling for a humanitarian regeneration. Despite scientific and technological progress, today we are faced with global problems--in particular, national conflicts and insecurity, environmental destructions and climate change, global injustice and underdevelopment, and alienation between civilizations--due to the loss of values of humanity in the course of modern civilization. Redeeming humanitarian values fully to our lives, however, is a daunting task. It requires integrative collaboration across sectors, disciplines, and nations. As much as damage to humanity has generated complicated ills in every corner of our Planet, we need a holistic initiative transcending conventional boundaries and scopes and reflecting planetary consciousness in order to cure the ills. This integrative, collaborative, and trans-boundary initiative would complement the existing efforts that have been made within a more bounded range of interests and concerns.

Key Themes: CIVIC VALUES, CIVIC ENGAGEMENT, AND CIVIC ACTION

- Civic Values for Global Justice

- Civic Engagement in Public and Global Governance

- Civic Action for the Global Agenda Including Climate Change

The themes suggest a necessity for reflection and dialogue to address the global challenges facing humanity and future civilizations. Civic Values have to do with people’s perception, understanding, belief, and judgment that typically promote but sometimes hamper a maturation of humanity and civilization. Civic Engagement refers to network, organization, alliance, and partnership in diverse levels and fashions that may contribute to public and global governance. Civic Action involves movement, campaign, and decision-making by a wide range of actors as a reflection of their endeavor to solve global problems including climate change.

Along with keynote speeches by globally renowned figures, the WCF welcomes applications for papers and panels. In an effort to substantiate the main and key themes, the WCF will pay particular attention to papers and panels on the following issues:

- Climate Change (Global Warming)

- Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)

- Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development

- Energy Shortage

- Economic Prosperity and Equality

- Poverty and Foreign Aid (ODA)

The WCF invites and welcomes submissions for papers and panels on other related themes or topics so long as they emulate the main and key themes. The WCF will have preference for proposals that are interdisciplinary or have practical implications.

HOW TO SUBMIT PROPOSALS

This Call for Papers and Panels is open to all members of the global community--scholars, international organization leaders, NGO leaders, government officials, corporation representatives, journalists, etc. Individuals, institutions, or groups may propose papers or panels by completing the Paper and Proposal Submission Form via on-line at the WCF 2009 official website: http://www.wcf2009.org/callpaper_form.php. A panel consists of three to four paper presentations, a chairperson, and discussant(s), or it can take the form of a roundtable. Individually submitted papers, upon acceptance, will be assigned to appropriate panels or poster sessions. The WCF reserves the right to refuse proposals or alter panel proposals. All submissions should be in E nglish. Accepted presenters must register as conference delegates. All presentations and papers will be published on the conference website. Presentations and papers may also be published (with agreement of authors) in the conference proceedings. Registration fee and incentives for speakers will be announced shortly.

DEADLINE FOR PROPOSAL SUBMISSIONS: January 31, 2009

The deadline for proposal submissions is January 31, 2009. The WCF will confirm acceptance of submissions, at the latest time, by February 28, 2009. Acceptance process will proceed on the first-come-first-serve basis. Proposals received after the deadline may be considered but are unlikely to be included in the program.

Walau bagaimanapun, bukan tidak mungkin, kelak muncul barisan penulis yang mampu melahirkan karya besar yang bermutu dan terkehadapan dalam dunia kesusasteraan remaja. Perkara ini boleh berlaku terutamanya apabila wujud suasana yang kondusif bersama-sama perancangan dan usaha yang bersesuaian. Untuk memilih, menerima dan mengabsahkan nilai sesebuah naskhah karya remaja, pelbagai aspek perlu dihalusi dan diteliti. Sehubungan dengan itu, maklumat daripada penyelidikan, pengajaran dan juga pandangan para sarjana dalam seminar ini diharap dapat dikongsi bersama dengan harapan supaya Kesusasteraan Melayu dapat menjana minda remaja ke arah pembinaan negara bangsa. Selari dengan situasi kini, seminar ini diharap dapat mengupas isu-isu yang berkaitan dengan karya, psikologi, misi, visi dan kritikan terhadap sesebuah sastera remaja.

Seminar ini bertemakan “Sastera Remaja: Menjana Korpus, Membina Khalayak”.

• Membicarakan secara kritis tentang ciri dan sifat yang perlu ada dan dipertahankan pada karya sastera remaja.
• Merangsang pertumbuhan pengarang baharu karya sastera remaja, di samping menampung ketekalan pengarang mapan yang sedia ada.
• Merangsang kelahiran karya sastera remaja yang hebat dari segi persoalan, mutu bahasa dan mutu seninya, dan berdaya saing pada peringkat kebangsaan dan antarabangsa.
• Menggalakkan penerbitan karya kesusasteraan remaja yang berkualiti dalam bahasa Melayu.
• Membina khalayak sastera remaja yang jitu, khususnya dalam kalangan generasi muda Malaysia, agar mereka dapat pula menjadi khalayak karya sastera yang lebih serius pada masa hadapan.

Kertas kerja boleh ditulis hasil daripada penyelidikan, kajian dan tinjauan terhadap kajian-kajian lepas atau dibentangkan berdasarkan pengalaman pengajaran, berupa saranan atau komentar terhadap isu-isu yang berkaitan dengan:

Background
Don Clifton commercial background is in the financial services sector (over 30 years in that industry) having held a number of senior positions with firms involved in investment funds management, plus ran his own financial planning business for a while in the 1980's. Currently he is undertaking a PhD at the University of South Australia, the title of the project being "Sustainability and Government - a case study of the South Australian Government". He also lecture in the UniSA MBA programme in areas of corporate strategy.

He hold a Master of Advanced Business Practice (UniSA), a Master of Business Administration (Advanced) (University of Adelaide) and a Bachelor of Arts (University of Adelaide). He is also a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

PhD research
Don Clifton PhD thesis focuses on how the outcomes of government policies and practices contribute to or detract from the global objective of a 'Sustainable World' that is, the objective of humans living sustainably on the Earth.

The project involves a number of aspects including:
• Clarifying what it means for there to be a Sustainable World, which involves an extensive review of the literature and the building of a typology that sets out various views on how a Sustainable World is conceived.
• The use of Resilience Theory to assess the merits of various approaches to sustainability to better understand how these different approaches are more or less likely to see a Sustainable World come about.
• A case study of a particular government approach to sustainability (in this case, the South Australian government)
• The use of Ecological Footprint Analysis to assess the likely outcomes of the Government's approach from a sustainability perspective.
• Consideration of the implications of the South Australian Government's approach to sustainability, what this means in relation to its contribution or otherwise to achievement of a Sustainable World, and how these insights might be useful in aiding the progress of a broader sustainability agenda beyond the South Australian context.

In my presentation, I will overview each of these key aspects of my research work and present some preliminary findings and insights.

BIODATA OF SPEAKER

Professor Devlin is inaugural Chair of Higher Education Research at Deakin University. Widely published and a registered psychologist, Professor Devlin’s research interests and expertise span higher education policy, equity, teaching improvement, curriculum development, interdisciplinarity, leadership, assessment, student learning and Indigenous higher education. Prior to her appointment at Deakin University, Professor Devlin was Associate Professor and Director of the Teaching and Learning Unit in the Faculty of Economics and Commerce and Deputy Director of the Centre for the Study of Higher Education, both at the University of Melbourne. Recently, she completed two national studies on student finances and student equity.

Abstract

Research into higher education is increasingly gaining momentum. It is vitally important that the highest standards of scholarship possible are applied to each and every investigation that scholars in the field of higher education undertake. As well as being an important aim in itself, the pursuit of high quality research into higher education meets requirements for greater accountability and efficiency in the context of increased student diversity and reduced funding worldwide. The quality of higher education research is dependent on a number of factors and dimensions. These include appropriate preparatory groundwork; the formulation and use of clear research questions; the appropriate use of conceptual and theoretical framework(s); ethical research conduct; the use of relevant and appropriate methods and methodology and choosing the highest quality dissemination outlets. This seminar will discuss each of the components of high quality research.

Conference Themes:

Theoretical or empirical studies on urban form and process, urban population change including migration, urban systems, quality of life, sustainable development, city marketing & economic development, social justice, urban governance, applications related to GIS, comparative urbanization, and environmental conditions in Asian cities. Other papers which contribute to an understanding of Asian urbanization are welcomed.

INVITATION FOR PAPERS FOR THE SEMINAR ON "THE NATURAL HERITAGE OF
NORTHERN PENINSULAR MALAYSIA", 2-3 APRIL 2009, SCHOOL OF HUMANITIES,
UNIVERSITI SAINS MALAYSIA.

The School of Humanities, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is organising
a seminar on the "Natural Heritage of Northern Peninsular Malaysia" on
2-3 April 2009. We would like to invite you to present a paper on any
aspect of the natural heritage of any area (e.g. Penang National park,
Perlis State Park, Royal Belum, etc) in northern Peninsular Malaysia
(Perlis, Kedah, Penang & north Perak [includes Kuala Kangsar northwards
only]).

The papers/talk should focus on the following (you are free to include
other relevant issues/comments):

(i) Natural heritage characteristics of the area - what
are the uniqueness/richness in terms of geology, flora, flora,
biodiversity,hydrology, and other environmental attributes? (e.g. In the
case of bird/animal sanctuary, one may include unique/exotic species or
endemic species found only in the area)

(ii) Man-environment interactions in the area - focus on
positive interactions (conservation efforts, sustainable development,
reafforestation, etc) and negative interactions (loss of biodiversity,
increase in environmental hazards, climate change, water pollution,
destruction of catchments, soil erosion and landslides, etc)

(iii) Threats to the area - both natural and human

(iv) Proposals and suggestions to protect, conserve and
develop the area sustainably

(v) Other related issues and comments.

There is no registration fee. The deadline to email me your full paper
is end Feb 2009. We will publish a book of proceedings before the
seminar and an edited book based on selected papers after the seminar.

Khazanah Nasional Bhd will be organizing its Khazanah Penang Lectures #2 with Richard Engelhardt and his topic will be on “How to Manage a World Heritage Site”.

Richard is currently the UNESCO Regional Advisor for Culture for Asia and the Pacific, based in Bangkok. His professional interests include ethno-archaeology, the evolution of cultural landscapes, urban archaeology, and culture resource management. In recent years, he has held visiting lectureships at the University of Hawaii (USA), Waseda University (Japan), Payap University (Thailand), and the Royal University of Fine Arts (Cambodia).

Richard Engelhardt’s Biodata:

Richard was educated in anthropology, archaeology, and the history of East, South, and Southeast Asia at Yale and Harvard Universities and at the post-graduate Population Institute of the East-West Center at the University of Hawaii. For the past 25 years, he has directed archaeology and heritage conservation projects throughout Asia and the Indo-Pacific region. Richard has also served in various executive capacities with regional professional institutions, including the Siam Society under Royal Patronage and the Hong Kong Archaeological Society. In 1981, he joined the United Nations system and has worked with the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, as well as a number of UN Specialized Agencies, including UNHCR (United Nations High Commission for Refugees), whose office in the Philippines he headed from 1986 until 1989.

From 1991 until 1994, Richard re-opened and served as Director of the UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization) Office in Cambodia, where he launched the international safeguarding campaign for Angkor. In recognition of his services in the preservation of the Angkor Monuments, H.M. King Norodom Sihanouk awarded him the title of Commandeur de l'Ordre Royal du Cambodge. Richard is currently UNESCO Regional Advisor for Culture for Asia and the Pacific, based in Bangkok.

He is the author of numerous scholarly articles, books and publications, including (most recently) Two Thousand Years of Engineering Genius on the Angkor Plain (Expedition 37:3) and numerous articles on the Ethno-Archaeology of Maritime Communities in the Southeast Asian Archipelago, which are being collated and edited in a book, co-authored with Pamela Rumball Rogers, to be published by the University of Utah Press.

The POSCO TJ Park Foundation (www.postf.org) is an independent and
non-profit organization fully financed by POSCO, one of global leading
steelmakers.
The Foundation has been contributing to the future of our society and
Asia by expanding its range of the social responsibilities through
cultivating leadership for the next generation, realizing Asian
networking, and sharing project for public interests.

To facilitate mutual understanding and development in Asia, the
Foundation and the POSCO Research Institute (POSRI) (www.posri.re.kr)
have launched the Research Grants for Asian Studies and collects
comprehensive area studies on Asia in liberal arts and social sciences
fields as follows.

The goal of the POSCO TJ Park Foundation Research Grants is to support
Asian studies to promote mutual understanding and cooperation in Asia,
so that the research themes are generally open to fields of liberal arts
and social sciences such as history, archeology, science of religion,
geography, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, literature, psychology,
management, economics, etc.
Research themes for this year are:

1) Succession and Development of Traditional Culture in Asian Regions,
2) Creative Union between Asian Culture and Western Culture,
3) Cultural Transformation caused by Social, Economic, or Political Changes
in Asian Regions, or

[Free Topics]
4) Other topics in the fields of liberal arts and social sciences to
promote mutual
understanding and cooperation in Asia in the 21st century.

Make a proposal of research project and carry it out, suggesting new
theories or analyses related to Asian region through empirical studies,
field studies or literature studies
The qualified applicants are full-time faculty members and research
staff at universities in Asia
The value amount of grant is up to US$15,000 per project. (Researchers
are requested to make application after calculating proper budget
according to each subject. The value amount of grant can be adjusted
after discussions on application.)

Duration of grant: March 1, 2009 ~ February 15, 2010 (within one year)

Refund of Tuition fees for fellowship holders

If you are one of the fellowship holders of this semester, please take note that you have to go to IPS to collect a letter in order to get the refund of your tuition fees.

I believe most of you just like me, has submitted a letter to IPS at beginning of this semester to ask for refund. However, we only got a receipt from IPS at that time. After a few months I have waited and still have not get the money, I went to IPS and asked about it this morning. The IPS staff took my receipt and gave me a letter, which acknowledge that I’m under a program and ask “Jabatan Bendahari” to refund tuition fees to me.

So, if you are still waiting for your refund, bring your receipt to IPS to collect your letter. However, it is not the end yet. You have to bring a copy of your tuition fees’ receipt and send it to “Jabatan Bendahari” with the letter you collect from IPS to claim for the refund.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER:

Mr. Rapson, a career U.S. diplomat who joined the U.S. Department of State in 1983, is currently assigned as Deputy Chief of Mission to the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur. Immediately prior to coming to Malaysia in July 2008, he was the Director of the Office of Mainland Southeast Asia (MLS), which has lead responsibilities in the Department of State for policy issues concerning Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. From August 2005 to July 2006 he was the Deputy Director of that office.

Mr. Rapson’s previous overseas assignments include U.S. Embassy New Delhi, where he was the Economic Minister Counselor, two separate tours at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul, Korea, and postings in Japan and Indonesia. Mr. Rapson’s assignments in Washington include Division Chief for Bilateral Trade Affairs for Asia, Near East and Africa in the State Department’s Economic Bureau, Desk Officer in the Office of Japanese Affairs, and Watch Officer in the Department’s 24-hour Operations Center.

Mr. Rapson holds a BA from Pennsylvania State University and is a graduate of the Singapore American School. His wife and two children reside with him in Kuala Lumpur. He enjoys tennis and golf in his spare time.

Scholarship for International Peace Studies at the University for Peace

The International Peace Studies Dual Campus Master Programme is a shared initiative between the Nippon Foundation and the UN-Mandated University for Peace, in collaboration with Ateneo de Manila University, which aims to provide students from Japan and other Asian countries with an opportunity to pursue a peace studies post graduate degree with a content-based language-training module.

The programme offers support for individuals who do not have a proficient command of English to work in this increasingly common international language and to become comfortable in their professional abilities as they gain academic skills. As part of the programme, students have also the opportunity to apply their academic and practical knowledge through a four-month internship at the end of the Master courses.

Students accepted in the programme will be automatically granted full scholarships provided by the Nippon Foundation. A full scholarship includes: tuition fee, the language module, academic materials, and air travel and living

In this 19-month intensive academic programme, the students undertake courses at Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines as well as at the San José UPEACE headquarters in Costa Rica. It is accomplished in three terms which start at the end of the language-training module. The programme begins in April 2008.

The Dual Campus M.A. programme has been planned primarily for receiving students from several Asian countries where English is not a widely used language, such as Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. Exceptionally, students from other Asian countries may be admitted.

The candidate must have achieved a minimum candidature period but has yet sit for the viva voce examination
Only one participation is allowed per student
Each supervisor is allowed to nominate two students only
The medium of writing is Bahasa Melayu or the English language

About the Research Fellowship Program (RFP)

The Asian Muslim Action Network (AMAN) is pleased to announce the seventh round of the research fellowship program, “Islam in Southeast Asia: Views from Within”. The fellowship grants will be awarded for innovative research on issues concerning economic, socio-political and cultural changes taking place in the diverse Muslim communities of Southeast Asia, especially as they relate to modernization and globalization. The aim of this program is strengthening capacity of young Muslim researchers in SEA to understand the dynamic of Islam in SEA from an insider perspective, building research skill and providing publishing opportunity. The themes for 2008-2009 include:
· Islam and Popular Culture
· Southeast Asian Islam in the World Order
· Transnational Muslim ideologies and identity politics
· Islam and Changing Gender Realities
· Islam Values, Economic Activities and Social Responsibilities
· Confronting Environmental Degradation using Islamic Values

About the speaker

Born and raised in Indonesia, Dwi Rubiyanti Kholifah joined the Asian Muslim Action Network (AMAN) as coordinator of the research fellowship program since 2005. She went on to earn an MA in Health and Social Science at Mahidol University in Thailand, for which she researched on the dynamics of sexual health in the pesantren (pondok) in Indonesia. She has been active in the women’s movement in Indonesia for years as a trainer, resource person and researcher on women’s human rights, religion and gender justice, and sexual and reproductive health. Currently, she is the country representative of AMAN Indonesia, which is concerned with women in relation to peacebuilding and inter faith cooperation.

The Second Issue of Asian Perspectives (working title)

It is our pleasure to announce that our journal, Asian Perspectives (working title) on Asian history/cultural studies will be issued in March, 2009 by the Institute for East Asian Studies at SungKongHoe University.

Prospective authors are cordially invited to submit original contributions describing completed research related to cultural studies and history area.

The contributions will be screened and published on the second edition in March, 2009.

The contributions as for the second edition should be considered the following aspects:

- Subject Coverage: Asian history, Asian culture and critical & cultural studies in Asian regions.

SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS AND FULL PAPERS

Abstracts should not be more than 200 words long and must include a 100 word biodata (each presenter). The following information must also be included: Title of paper (clear and not too long), name of presenter/s, Full affiliation, complete address, including e-mail of presenter/s. All abstracts must be submitted following the deadline below. Abstracts may be in English or Bahasa Malaysia.

Full papers - A4 size, Arial 12 points, 1.5 spacing, MS Word 97/2003 using APA Citation Style (Publication manual of the American psychological association, 5th. Edition) must be submitted to the conference Secretariat following the deadline below. The following information must be included: Title of paper (clear and not too long); name of writer/s; full affiliation; complete address, including e-mail of presenter/s; abstract of paper not more than 200 words long and a 100 word biodata of each writer/s. Papers may be in English or Bahasa Malaysia.

The Journal of the Malaysian Institute of Planners (MIP) or PLANNING MALAYSIA JOURNAL (ISSN 16756215) is a refereed and multidisciplinary journal related to theory, experiments, research, and development, applications of ICT, and practices of planning and development worldwide. The objective of the Journal is to promote activities of town planning, governance, engineering and environmental design through dialogue and exchange of views concerning the built environment and sustainability.

MIP welcomes any news, feature articles, or peer reviewed articles (including book review, software review, etc.) for publication. All articles should be an original work by the author(s).

MIP has the pleasure to invite you to contribute to its scientific refereed journal. The Journal covers the following areas:

Town Planning
Regional Planning
Resource and Environmental Planning
Urban Design
Environmental Conservation and Design
Habitat and Housing
Urban Development and Processes
Transportation Planning and Traffic Management/Engineering
Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Planning Support Systems (PSS)
E-Planning and any ICT applications in Urban and Regional Planning
Sustainable Development
Community and Social Planning
Good governance practices
Universal Planning and Design (disability, bearer free, etc.)
Environmental Sciences and Engineering in Planning (including initiatives and studies on low carbon, zero discharged, global warming, etc.)
Any specific themes such as Knowledge Cities, Safe Cities, Livable Cities, New Urbanism, MDGs, Agenda21, etc.
Other than above but of the interest of MIP and Town Planning Profession

Interested authors are invited to submit their contribution. Manuscripts should be sent in a digital form (softcopy) by using CD/DVD or via electronic mail to pmjournal@gmail.com or mip@mip.org.my. Article should generally be no more than 8000 words. Each manuscript should have a title page and an abstract of about 150 words. The title page should contain the title, full name(s), designation(s), organizational affiliation(s), a contact address, and an email address. Articles should also be submitted in a digital form (softcopy) by using a diskette or via electronic mail to: mip@mip.org.my. All articles are received on the understanding that they are not under concurrent consideration at another journal. Exclusive copyright of accepted manuscripts shall be assigned to the Publisher (i.e. the MIP), and in consideration for this, two copies of the current Journal will be provided for each article. Additional reprints of articles can be ordered, at cost, by the author(s). PDF format of the article (if available) can be obtained from the Publisher.

USM Fellowship Meeting - article by Tan Chee Seng

This morning IPS organized two meetings for USM fellowship, one is for the new fellowship holders while another for “old” holders. I joined the latter one and I think there is some information that worth to share with you all.
The first thing is that USM fellowship now is open for non USM students. Before that, the fellowship only limited to USM existing full-time research students; however, IPS made a little change. A non USM student can now apply the fellowship 1st then register as a USM student after he or she gets the fellowship. Of course, to do so, the applicant not only has to be outstanding, but also advised to identify a supervisor first. I think with this good news, we should encourage our friend who is interested in doing master or PhD to study in USM.
In addition to USM fellowship, IPS also provides Postgraduate Research Grant Schme. A PhD student can apply up to RM20,000 for his or her research which last for 3 years. Meanwhile, RM 10,000 will be given to master students within 2 years. Well, this is a good news for research students, I supposed. Unfortunately, we are told that this grant can only use for certain expenses. We cannot use the grant in, for example, hiring helpers for collecting data and entering data. I have no idea why we are not allowed to do so; can anyone tell me the reason? Anyway, applicants should take note about these limitations before submitting the application form.
Last but not least, it is about the obligation for a fellowship holder. From the 1st month I got the fellowship, I thought that I have to publish every six months in order to extend my fellowship. Nonetheless, I was told in the meeting that for master student, I only have to publish at least one article during the period (2 years) and PhD students need to publish at least one article every year within 3 years. Please takes note that this is the requirement of IPS but not the school. It is important to note that it is our school, but not IPS, to determine our extension. Therefore, in order to be extended successfully, the IPS officer advised me that I still need to do something to show my contribution even though I have met the IPS requirement. Of course, publishing paper in a high impact journal is the safest way.
That’s all information I can share with you all. Please correct me if I am wrong. Also, if you have any questions about USM Fellowship, you are welcome to post them here. Other fellows and I will try our best to help you.

Balai Siswazah

A visit to the Balai this morning shows that only the same students are using the Balai Siswazah facilities. As it is now, the facilities are in good condition, in fact, the computer facilities have been upgraded. Let us use the facilities and make the place more "lively" and "happening".

Please comment if you have any grievances about the Balai. The corridor lamp has been reported to IMOS system.

Course Work and Mixed Mode Registration

who register manually for courses, starting from Semester II, Academic Session 2008/09 must get the signature from the Course Coordinator and not from the Deputy Dean or Dean.

This is to ensure that your course code is correct.

APEX Status and Us.....

I was involved in one of the interviews during the interview session by the APEX committee panel. The spirit on that day was just to "do your best", the probability to be chosen as APEX was still blurish, with vicious competition from other universities....All of you have benefited from the RU status, we are still not clear what to come under the APEX status, but the emphasis remain, postgraduate programmes will be expanded, with all the benefits....of course you are expected to deliver outcomes.....publications of all forms - papers, articles, journals and to be within the top 100, if possible top 50, we need more ISIs papers. With the PGRS, research students are now given the chance to become principle investigators of their own small reearch projects and again remember to produce original outcomes. The strains will also be on us, lecturers, who have to doubled, tripled, quadrupled our duties as administrators, researchers, writers, etc.

Before I leave the office as Deputy Dean in April 2009, I am called to create this blog. The purpose of the blog is as one of the ways to disseminate information regarding opportunities (grants, fellowship, seminars, etc) to the students (more opportunities now as a result of RU and APEX). The blog will also provide a platform for students to discuss issues directly related to their experiences here in USM under the School of Social Sciences. You can voice your grievances, delight, ideas, opinions, etc here. The issues can vary from as serius as your thesis topic and theoretical discourse to as common as sighting or experiencing abnormal phenomena at the "Balai Siswazah". We can also plan activities such as outings together, annual dinner or even a "poco-poco" session (opps....must be Islamic though, ladies one side and men the other sides).
